Electronic Music and Culture

The Electronic Music and Culture is a one term (semester) program consisting of four modules that looks at the history and cultural influences of electronic music as well as a close look at the different music styles.

1 – History of Electronic Instruments and Pioneers

In this module we look at the beginnings of electronic music and sound experimentations that give birth to the modern concepts of music making and sound reproduction. This includes Thomas Alva Edison’s phonograph and the early XX century researchers.

2 – Electronic Music Styles

This is the main body of the program that is closely related to the third module. Here we see how the different electronic music styles take form and mutate into others depending on the place and moment (socio-cultural events that make a new voice come together to represent a group of people).

There is a close look at the differences between styles and their characteristics.

3 – Urban Tribes in Electronic Culture

Here there is an analysis of the different urban tribes that exist and have existed throughout the electronic music era. Also there is a close look at the local scene and how Colombia and its young people have adopted electronic music and its culture.

4 – Music Technology

In the final module of the program we look at the technologies involved in electronic music making in a workshop style: students experiment with diverse instruments that include turntable and vinyl, mixers, and moving to computer music where we will use computers and software for music purposes. There is a special emphasis on the use of free software to motivate students to use software legally and realize the amount of available tools free of cost that people can use in creation processes.
